Twelve (12) Years Experience or Two (2) Years Experience Repeated Six (6) Times?
- ©GC Diaries

Earlier today, I met up with a childhood friend of mine just to catch up as we occassionally do.

He recently left his job at a Fortune 100 company to start his consulting company specializing in Business Intelligence and Big Data Analytics.

One of the reasons he left was that he had ticked all the boxes of the things he had wanted to learn, do, achieve and/or experience when he decided to join them.

As such, we concluded that there is a big diference between growing your experience and repeating the same experience many times. There is a difference between 12 years experience and 2years of experience repeated 6 times.

So here are some questions for you to privately reflect on:

1. Where you are, are you growing your professional experience or simply repeating it?

2. Before you took up your current role or look up for the next one, do you know and write down the things you want to get out of that job (eg: skills you want to learn, the network you want to build, the experience you want to get etc)?

3. If you don't, how do you know that its the right role for you and if it is, how do you know when is the right time to move out and pursue the next thing?

In our careers and professions, we need a vision. Career/Professional progression need not be an aimless random walk, but a purposeful journey towards something only you can define for yourself.

  1. Well said Grant! I like this. 12 experience or 2 years repeated twice??? Food for thought!
